(Pan, April 2009) To summarize the plot: Lena and Pru are friends, but tell each other little – and sometimes big – white lies. Lena is fashionable, anorexic and married to a gay man; Pru is trying to eat herself to death and collects suicide notes. These two make an awkward detective team, sometimes bumbling into the truth, other times figuring it out with the help of sad, bitchy or crazy accessories to the crime. “Light Reading” is indeed light reading – an engaging romp of a weekend who-dunnit. However, a family tragedy in the plot, which is depicted a tad too realistically for comfort, keeps it from being just plain silly.
