My favourite historical couple is Napoleon Bonaparte and Joséphine de Beauharnais (full name: Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie). Sandra Gulland, in her historical romance trilogy, focuses on Joséphine and depicts her relationship with Napoleon quite beautifully. (Read more about this trilogy, and other romantic novels.)
