Some novels just cry out to be made into films. Undermajordomo Minor, by Patrick deWitt, is one of those. I can even visualize the leads: Let’s see; the mad “Baron von Aux” – Christopher Walken. It’s the hairstyle, you know. “Lucy” Minor – Daniel Radcliffe. He’s got that kooky intensity. His lady love – it’s has to be someone who can do a slightly dippy but sexy medieval wench…Emma Stone? The role of the baroness would be a shoe-in for that stunning ice queen in the funny spoof Vikings series, Norsemen, Silje Torp Færavaag. And “Olderglough”, the majordomo, would be perfect for Michael Kitchen, who can do ponderous, slightly threatening characters very well. And of course, he has that tone of voice.
It’s got all the ingredients to make a visual feast. Here is my take on the novel in 53 seconds.
